Lesson: The Gingerbread Man

The foolish gingerbread man did not judge well. He trusted the clever fox and believed his lie. It cost him his life.

Perhaps students can practice judging truths by playing a game in which each student makes up a fact about something in the world that is either true always, sometimes true or a lie.

For example: “A baby can ride a bicycle” (a lie) “Leaves are red in the fall.” (sometimes true) “Candles burn slowly.” (always true)

Lesson: Stone Soup

Stone Soup is an old folktale in which a hungry stranger convinces the people of a town to each share a small amount of their food, in order to make a meal that everyone enjoys, and exists as a moral regarding the value of sharing and working with others for the greater good.

After listening to this story introduce the idea of the value of contributing & working with others.

Questions:

What kinds of things can we get done together that are harder to do alone?

What would “Stone Soup” taste like without any of the meat & vegetables contributed by the town folk.

What lesson does this story teach us?

Lesson: The Little Red Hen

  • The Little Red Hen

In this classic folktale, the Little Red Hen does all the work to bake the bread herself, while her lazy barnyard friends do nothing.

Good discussion topics are how do families share their responsibilities to do daily chores? How do the children help clean up in class? What kinds of important jobs do people do in a community to make it work?  For example a policeman, fireman, doctor and teacher. Students can draw pictures of people working and helping each other at home and in their classrooms. You can divide children in groups to do a task. Afterwards, ask them how it went? Was it easier to have others helping?

Character Education

For the youngest students, the story has the lesson that the hen could do the things herself but her friends should have helped her. A combination of being proud of things you can do yourself and thinking of ways to help others is a good character lesson for this story. The value of hard work is another.
